You know, there are a lot of potato chip products out there beyond just the conventional brands that we?re all familiar with.? As sweet potatoes gain in popularity, you start to see new sweet potato products out on the market.
I get bored of regular old potato chips and quite frankly, that?s not a bad thing since chips aren?t exactly an essential food item (although I?m sure some folks might beg to differ). Recently though, I came across a bag of sweet potato chips made by Covered Bridge. I?ve never heard of Covered Bridge sweet potato chips with sea salt before so I thought I?d give them a try and review them for ThingsThatWeDo.com.? Hey, if I haven?t heard of them before, maybe you haven?t either. So, what exactly is a Covered Bridge sweet potato chip?
Product Review: What are the ingredients in the Covered Bridge sweet potato chips with sea salt?
So, what?s in these Covered Bridge sweet potato chips with sea salt? Good news, there are only 3 basic ingredients: sweet potato, canola oil, and sea salt. Ah, so my guess is that Covered Bridge cuts the sweet potatoes, fries them up and sprinkles them with the sea salt. Like most other regular potato chips, these Covered Bridge sweet potato chips with sea salt have just those 3 ingredients so in that way, I like that they?re unpretentious and simple. The real test then lies in the taste of the product because the best is one that is balanced in flavour and texture (ever eat a tasty soggy chip before? *shivers*).
Product Review: How do the Covered Bridge sweet potato chips with sea salt taste?
Um?uh?.I guess these Covered Bridge sweet potato chips with sea salt taste okay? That?s about as positive as I can put my statement. I opened the bag, dumped out a few to take these photos and I did find these Covered Bridge sweet potato chips with sea salt to be a little on the dark side, not because they?re sweet potatoes but perhaps because they?ve been fried for too long. I?m not sure but that?s what I think happened to my particular bag of Covered Bridge sweet potato chips with sea salt.
These Covered Bridge sweet potato chips with sea salt are cut on the thinner side which makes it easier for them to turn a bit too brown for my liking. As for taste, they had a crisp light crunch but I honestly found them too heavy on the salt to the point where the saltiness overwhelmed to taste of the sweet potato. All I could taste was the sea salt in which case, I?d probably reverse the title and call them sea salt with hint of sweet potato.
The weird thing is though, that the nutritional daily value information notes that 35 chips or 50g serving uses only 3% of your daily intake of sodium (70 mg) which I find surprising. Given how salty it tastes, I thought it would be much higher.
My conclusion: because the sweet potato chips are so thin, the sea salt must truly be overwhelming the sweet potato flavour. I hate to say it but I also felt like the chips were a bit on the oily side.
Verdict:
Sadly, I don?t think these Covered Bridge sweet potato chips with sea salt are the right chip for me. Sure, I like chips and I make my own sweet potato fries but these Covered Bridge sweet potato chips with sea salt are a bit disappointing for their near $4 price point. Actually, I don?t even think they?re worth buying at any price simply because the flavours are not balanced properly. I think I?ll save my sodium use for something a bit more satisfying. Oh well?on to the next review!
